It only redirects your traffic to its destination without any additional features. No built-in encryption or mask. It only hides your IP address and helps you avoid simple blocks.
However, countries with advanced censorship can detect the SOCKS5 traffic and stop it. The server address and the port number are required to configure SOCKS5. A username and password are also required in some SOCKS5 proxies.

Encryption: MTProto has built-in encryption. SOCKS5 has no encryption at all. MTProto is more secure.

How to Set Up a Proxy in Telegram
Setting up a proxy in Telegram takes less than one minute. The steps are the same on Android, iPhone, and desktop.
For Android:
Open Telegram and tap the three lines menu in the top left. Go to Settings, then tap Data and Storage. Scroll down and tap Proxy Settings. Turn on Use Proxy. Tap Add Proxy and choose either MTProto or SOCKS5. Enter your proxy details (server, port, and secret or password). Tap the checkmark to save.
For iPhone:
Open Telegram and tap Settings at the bottom right. Tap Data and Storage, then scroll to Proxy. Turn on Use Proxy and tap Add Proxy. Select your proxy type. Fill in the server address, port, and credentials. Tap Done to save.
For Desktop:
Click the three lines menu and go to Settings. Click Advanced and find Connection Type. Select Use Custom Proxy. Choose MTProto or SOCKS5. Enter your proxy information and click Save.
Testing your proxy:
After setup, you’ll see a shield icon at the top of your chat list. If it’s green, your proxy is working. If it’s red or gray, check your proxy details again.
