There’s a particular kind of frustration in needing to check whether you’ll be paid R370, and not having enough data to find out.
It happens to a lot of people. The month runs down, the airtime runs out, and the one thing standing between you and knowing whether there’s money coming is a website you can’t load. Some people end up buying R5 of data to check a grant worth R370, which is a small absurdity that nobody in government seems to have thought about very hard.
The good news is that two of the four official channels to check SRD Status Check cost nothing at all, and one of them works on a phone made fifteen years ago. Here’s what each option actually costs you, and what to do when none of them seem to be working.
What you need before you start
Two things, and they have to match what SASSA has on file:
- Your 13-digit South African ID number
- The cellphone number you used when you applied
That second one causes more failed checks than anything else. Your entire SASSA profile is linked to that number. Change your SIM, lose the phone, switch networks and unless you’ve updated it on the portal, your status may simply refuse to display. That isn’t a decline. It’s a mismatch, and it’s fixable.
The free options
USSD dial *120*3210#
This is the one to use if you have nothing. No data, no smartphone, no airtime balance required. It works on any handset that can make a call, including basic feature phones.
Dial the code, a menu appears, choose the SRD status option, then enter your ID number and registered cellphone number. Your status and payment date come back within a few seconds.
If that code doesn’t respond, try *120*69277# or the older *134*7737#. Some networks route them differently. The session also times out after a short period of inactivity, so have your ID number ready before you dial rather than digging for it mid-menu.
One warning: the USSD line gets hammered in the last week of the month, when everyone is checking for payment dates at once. Early morning is noticeably more reliable than mid-afternoon on the 25th.
Call centre 0800 60 10 11
Toll-free from South African landlines and all the major mobile networks. You’ll go through a menu, enter your ID number, and either get an automated response or speak to an agent.
It costs nothing but time, and the queues during payment week are long. Worth it if USSD is failing and you have no data at all.
The low-data options

WhatsApp 082 046 8553
Save the number, start a chat, and follow the prompts. It uses a small amount of data, but most South African networks zero-rate WhatsApp, which in practice makes this free for a lot of people even on an empty bundle.
The official portal srd.sassa.gov.za
Enter your ID and cellphone number, submit. This gives you the fullest result: current status, payment date and pay channel. It’s also the only channel where you can actually change things, update your banking details, change your registered phone number, or lodge an appeal.
So even if you check by USSD every month, you’ll need the portal eventually. It’s worth loading it on someone’s WiFi when you can.
Moya App
Zero-rated on supported networks, so you can browse it without a data bundle. It’s a legitimate app and reads the same official records, but it’s a third-party product rather than something SASSA runs. Android and iOS, roughly 100MB to install, so you’ll need data or WiFi once to get it on the phone.
All five routes pull from the same SASSA database. There’s no “faster” channel that gets you approved sooner. Use whichever one your phone and your budget allow, and doing a Sassa status check monthly matters far more than which method you pick.
When the check doesn’t work
“Incorrect details” but you know they’re right. Almost always the phone number. Check whether you’ve changed SIMs since applying. Also check for stray spaces if you’re typing on the portal, and make sure you’re entering the ID number with no gaps.
The status won’t load at all. Same cause, usually. Try a different channel before assuming there’s a problem with your application if WhatsApp fails but USSD works, that’s a channel issue, not an application issue.
USSD returns nothing or hangs. Networks occasionally disable USSD during overnight maintenance windows. Try again in the morning, or use one of the alternate codes.
It says Approved but there’s no payment date. This is normal and catches people out every month. SRD payment dates are assigned individually in the final week, roughly between the 24th and month end. If you check on the 10th, the date field will often be blank or show null. That’s not an error. Check again after the 24th.
Status has been Pending for a while. Verification generally runs 7 to 14 days from the start of the payment month. Inside that window, Pending means the system is still working, not that something has gone wrong.
Status says Referred. A third-party database check is in progress Home Affairs, UIF or SARS. These clear in batches and usually need nothing from you. Whatever you do, don’t submit a second application. Duplicate applications linked to one ID number can trigger a fraud flag and make things considerably worse.
Your status is not your balance
This trips up an enormous number of people, partly because several third-party websites get it wrong.
Your status tells you whether you’ve been approved and when payment is due. Your balance tells you how much money is actually sitting in the account. These are two different systems, and SASSA doesn’t run a balance service at all.
The USSD line returns status and payment date. It does not return a balance. Any website telling you otherwise is wrong.
Where you check your balance depends on how you get paid:
- Bank account use your bank’s app, its USSD code, an ATM, or the bank’s helpline
- Postbank card dial *120*355#, use any ATM, ask at the till in Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer or Spar, or call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55
Three rules that will keep you safe
The SRD grant attracts a steady industry of fake portals, cloned WhatsApp numbers and “consultants”. Three rules cover almost all of it.
SASSA never charges for anything. Not applications, not status checks, not appeals, not fast-tracking. If money is requested at any point, walk away.
Nobody can guarantee approval. Eligibility is determined by an automated database check that runs every month. No agent, no website and no consultant can influence the outcome.
Only use the official channels. The portal is srd.sassa.gov.za. The WhatsApp number is 082 046 8553. The helpline is 0800 60 10 11. Third-party sites asking for your ID number and banking details are collecting data, not checking your status.
A simple monthly habit
Check once early in the month to see whether you’ve been approved. Check again after the 24th for your payment date. If it’s declined, read the reason properly and appeal within the 90-day window the appeal is free and doesn’t need a lawyer.
That’s the whole routine. Two checks a month, on a channel that costs you nothing, and you’ll always know where you stand.
