How to Use Alfa Schoology for Your Classroom

What is Alfa Schoology?

Alfa Schoology refers to the PowerSchool Learning Management system (Schoology) implemented by Alfa Fundacion, a K-12 learning management platform that connects teachers, students, and families within a unified digital environment. The platform serves as the educational technology backbone for Alfa Fundacion’s educational project, which identifies and educates students with high intellectual potential from communities in the Monterrey metropolitan area.

Alfa Fundacion operates an educational initiative focused on promoting social mobility. The organization provides quality education to public school students distinguished by their high intellectual capacity and achievement orientation. These students undergo a rigorous evaluation exam for selection. They receive continuous support from high school through college completion, with the ultimate goal of preparing them as excellent professionals committed to developing their communities. The organization has built a complete community where students, parents, teachers, and operational teams cooperate toward the success of this educational mission.

The Schoology platform supports learners through various educational formats. Students can learn in-person, in hybrid settings, or remotely. The system provides a simplified Elementary Experience for younger students and evolves alongside learners through graduation. Educators and families experience consistency across academic years. This continuous experience creates time-saving workflows for teachers. All academic work and educational technology tools consolidate within a single hub.

PowerBuddy AI integration within Schoology assists teachers in generating new ideas and creating content that lines up with grade-level standards and remains appropriate for K-12 education. The platform supports third-party AI tools and allows teachers to use resources provided by their schools or districts. The system has reliable assessment capabilities with tech-enhanced items, while Performance Matters assessments can be deployed from within Schoology for sophisticated assessment strategies and advanced reporting.

Schoology maintains powerful integrations with both Microsoft and Google ecosystems. Teachers can use Microsoft assignments or Google assignments within the platform. The system supports file management through Google Drive or Microsoft Office file systems. These integrations enable continuous workflow across different technological environments that educators and students already use.

How to access Alfa Schoology login

Classroom

Visit the home Schoology Alfa portal

The Alfa Schoology system starts at the designated portal URL. Users go to alfafundacion.schoology.com to reach the Alfa Fundacion implementation of the Schoology platform. The portal acts as the central entry point for students, teachers, and parents associated with the Alfa educational community.

Enter your credentials

Users must input their assigned username and password during login. Students and staff enter their username in the designated field, followed by their password in the corresponding authentication field. The system verifies these credentials against the Alfa Fundacion user database to grant appropriate access levels based on role assignments.

Parent accounts operate through a distinct access method. Parents require a parent access code that their child’s teacher provides to establish their original account. This access code has account creation instructions and links the parent profile to the student’s academic information. Parents who manage multiple children within the Alfa system can add additional students to a single parent account. They enter each child’s unique access code through the account management interface.

The dashboard

The top bar appears consistently across the platform once authentication completes. This bar provides access to four areas: Home, Courses, Groups, and Resources. The Schoology logo functions as a home button and returns users to their landing page whatever their current location within the system.

The bar has essential tools positioned on the right side:

  • Search function (magnifier icon) to locate content across the platform
  • App Center (four boxes icon) to access integrated applications
  • Calendar (calendar icon) that displays total events from courses, groups, and personal entries
  • Messages (envelope icon) for direct communication
  • Connections and Notifications (bell icon) for activity alerts and updates

The home page displays the Recent Activity feed and Course Dashboard right after login. This centralized view unites updates, discussion posts, tests, quizzes, and calendar items in chronological order. Users access their enrolled courses through the Courses dropdown menu, which lists active virtual classrooms where instruction, grading, and student communication occur.

Course pages feature a left-side panel that provides access to Materials, Gradebook, and Attendance sections. This panel has the Course Options menu with administrative tools and the Course Access Code at the bottom, which instructors distribute to students for course registration. The interface maintains consistency across different user roles while adjusting visible features according to permission levels assigned within the Alfa Fundacion educational structure.

Setting up your Alfa Schoology classroom

Create your course

Course creation in Alfa Schoology begins through the Courses dropdown menu. Teachers select My Courses and click Create Course to start the manual creation process. The creation form requires specific course information including Course Name, Subject Area, Level, and Grading Period. Users can create an unlimited number of courses within the platform.

Grading periods display only when the System Administrator establishes designated grading periods for the institution. The District Course Name field links Schoology courses to Curriculum Maps and populates from PowerSchool SIS integration based on imported Course Code. Section Names enable instructors to create multiple sections for similar courses within the district structure.

Sections can be generated through two methods: creating a section from an existing course without copying materials, or creating a section copy that duplicates course materials while keeping student rosters separate.

Add students to your roster

Student enrollment operates through a 10-digit Course Access Code located in the Members page and displayed in a green box within the left menu panel. Teachers distribute this code to students for self-registration at www.schoology.com/register. Students who have existing Schoology accounts join courses using the Access Code without creating new accounts.

The Add Members button provides an alternative enrollment method for enterprise implementations. Instructors can enable the Require Approval checkbox below the Access Code and mandate manual approval before students join the course even with valid access credentials. Access Codes can be reset through the Members page when unauthorized users get the original code. This generates new credentials while keeping enrollment for existing course members.

Organize course materials

You can organize materials by creating folders through Add Materials and selecting Add Folder. PowerSchool recommends adding no more than 5,000 materials per course. Folders can be tailored by week, section, topic, or chapter. Availability dates control when content becomes available to students.

Materials are added by selecting Add Materials from the main course page or within folders. The platform supports a variety of material types including assignments, quizzes, files, links, discussions, pages, and media albums. Materials can be imported from Resources or created within folders. Availability settings allow unpublished status for content prepared in advance, with options for publish-on-start-date or published-during-date-range configurations.

Set up gradebook

Grade Setup management requires at least one grading category to use the Gradebook functionality. Teachers can create unlimited categories such as Classwork, Homework, or Quizzes through the Grade Setup section. Categories support weighted calculations and Drop Lowest settings to exclude specified numbers of lowest grades from student overall scores.

Grading scales convert alphanumeric values to percentages. Final Grade Settings customize calculation and display methods for student final grades. The platform supports Numeric, A+/-, and custom grading scales for grade presentation.

Key features to use in Alfa Schoology

Assignment creation and tracking

Teachers create assignments by selecting the Courses tab, choosing a course and navigating to a specific folder or the main course area. The Add Materials button opens options to select Add Assignment, which launches the Create Assignment window. Required fields include assignment name and category selection, while optional fields cover description, due date and point value. Instructors can enable grading through the Edit option and select appropriate assignment categories before saving changes. Students track assignments through the notification pane, calendar and Grades section within their courses.

Discussion boards

Discussion boards make shared learning spaces where teachers help student conversations. Instructors create discussion boards by accessing the course materials section and selecting the discussion board option. The creation process allows customization of discussion topics, posting parameters and student interaction settings. Discussion boards support threaded conversations where students respond to prompts and participate in peer contributions.

Resource sharing

Public Resources function as a community database where educators share files, links, course materials and content folders with the Schoology community. Teachers share resources by selecting Resources, clicking the bookshelf icon next to the desired item, completing the sharing form with subject information and selecting Make Public. Shared resources display a globe icon in personal collections. Educators browse Public Resources through subject, resource type, level, file format or rating filters. Downloaded resources save to the Downloads collection in Personal Resources to organize and distribute to administered courses and groups.

Parent communication tools

The Activity Feed displays posts from school administrators in the Recent Activity area, where parents receive email notifications about new updates. Parents switch between their account and student accounts by clicking their name and selecting the child’s name from the account switcher. Notification settings allow parents to enable or disable specific email types through Settings and the Notifications tab. Email digest functionality provides daily or weekly summaries of student activity when enabled in the child’s account view. Parents can activate overdue work notifications through the Overdue Submissions Email setting.
