Mac keychain is not working

Things to do if the Mac keychain is not working

The keychain on a Mac keychain is not working is the built-in security storage system where it keeps your login items, certificates, keys and passwords. Simply put, this is a place where all your safe and crucial information is stored. So, it’s imperative to make sure that all the information is there, undisturbed. Because if it’s not, that can be very problematic. Thankfully, there are different approaches you can do here, and they are all outlined below.

Unlock the keychain manually

You can enter the keychain access from spotlight, and then you choose the Open Keychain Access option. In the sidebar, you just select login under keychain and then unlock keychain Login. Enter your password, and you will unlock it manually. If you have keychain issues, this should be the first thing that you attempt doing, just to be on the safe side here.

Update the keychain password to match the login password

You can enter the Keychain Access, click login and edit to change the password for the keychain login. You are changing the password to a new one, and then you will be good to go. When you have these keychain not found Mac issues, such an approach can be great and it can help save quite a bit of time from your side.

Reset the default chains

If you are dealing with the problem, you could also try to reset the default keychains. That can help if unlocking fails and you can’t do the password mismatch thing. It won’t always be the desired option, but it does work pretty well, and the value is certainly there for those who want it.

The idea here is that you can enter the keychain access, select settings and reset the default keychains. It’s a more serious solution and not the best one most of the time. But the fact that it can do wonders and it works very well is definitely something you will appreciate here. With that in mind, it’s something that you do need to consider and maybe you should talk with a professional beforehand, just to be on the safe side of things here.

Re-create the login keychain

Sometimes, the best solution is to actually try to delete and then re-create the login keychain. This is also a good solution, if the keychain issues persist and you can’t seem to find the right solution. You can enter the “~/Library/keychains/” path and in here you want to find a login keychain file that in that user folder, rename or move it. Don’t delete it. Mac OS will create a new one when it can’t find it, so it’s a good approach because it will restart the login keychain, and that alone can prove to be extremely beneficial a lot of the time.

Creating a new keychain via the Terminal

In general, using the Terminal is not a good idea because creating a new keychain is actually going to be very problematic. The advantage with this kind of stuff is that it does offer a more in-depth solution, but you do need to adjust and adapt it the way you see fit, which is always handy.

The problem with using the Terminal is that if you’re not careful or you are typing in the wrong guidelines, it might actually cause more harm than good. So it does make sense to try and work with a professional if you don’t know how to use the Terminal properly, just to be on the safe side. That will make a massive difference in the end, which does matter quite a bit here.

Tips to consider

  • When it comes to resetting the keychain, this will create a new keychain, which means the old saved passwords might not be accessible. Creating a backup of the old keychain is a very good idea, so keep that in mind.
  • If you want to find the keychain password, the login keychain password needs to match the login password of your Mac, so keep that in mind.
  • The keychain error appears at times, mainly because the login keychain password is hot updated. Password resets tend to be the most common reason why such a thing happens in the first place, so you have to keep this in mind.

What you need to know is that resetting the keychain is a good idea, if you encounter these problems. They won’t always have an easy fix, and sometimes rebuilding the keychain is going to be necessary. But changing passwords could also work as well, which is why you want to address things effectively here. It’s a great opportunity and one that can help make things much easier than you might expect. Make sure that you always contact a professional if the simpler tips are not working, just to be on the safe side.
