Get started in data science
How can someone get started in data science? This is a question I get asked all too often. One of the challenges of data science is that it involves many different parts:
- Coding
- Knowledge of statistics
- Knowledge of machine learning
- Soft-skills, like coming up with good feature ideas
Becoming a data scientist is something that is always work in progress.Even a veteran data scientist has to keep learning and adapting their skills.
However, taking a more practical focus, data science is about solving real world problems. And the fundamentals of data science can often be enough for impactful change. Especially if you already have some technical skills. I believe that someone with some quantitative acumen could easily get started in data science by putting 1-2 months effort.
Learn data science, the fast way
That’s why I decided to create a short online-assisted course for data science. This course is meant for people like business analysts, STEM graduates and software developers, who simply want to get some of the basics of data science down. The course covers the following topics:
- Overview of statistics and machine learning
- Technical overview
- Models and algorithms
- Model testing and metrics
- Aiding decision making
- Preprocessing
- Introduction to Weka
- Python and R
The term “online-assisted” refers to a new popular hybrid format of learning. You will be given access to online content, which you can read at your own pace, over a period of a few months. In the meantime, you will be mentored by me, while you are developing a project or a solution. This will help consolidate everything you’ve learned. This style of learning combines the best elements of online courses, like MOOCs, and more traditional methods of teaching.
